The Gym Can Be A Confusing Place When You First Start
It is not unusual to be concerned about learning to fit into the gym environment. How do I share machines with someone? How do I know when it is my turn to use a treadmill? How do I get help if I need it? All of these are common questions members ask during their first month or two with us. The following guide should help you get started or simply ask the first staff member you see if your question is not included here.

How do I get a locker or towel when I visit the gym?
Lockers are first come first serve, but we have plenty. You need to bring your own lock. If you forget your lock, we can rent you a lock on a per visit basis. Most of our members bring a towel from home. If you prefer, however, the Club can rent you a towel for your visit. Towels and locks are both available for rent for $1.00 each at the front desk. Towels are also available for $10 a month, which can be added to your membership.

How do I set an appointment for my first few workouts?
We want you to get started properly by having a trainer set you up on your own program. The Club has individual workouts available to help you learn the basics of doing your first workout program. Everyone has different degrees of experience so we tailor your workouts and the number you need according to your individual needs. To schedule your workouts and to find out what help you may need, ask any trainer or stop by the front desk. Please try and keep the appointments you do set since last minute cancellations or no-shows are hard on staff scheduling and your fellow members who desire help. We also help in finding compatible workout partners if you are interested.

How do I work in on the floor?
If you wish to share equipment with another member, simply ask, "May I work in?" When you take your turn, finish your set or exercise in a timely manner and then allow others to share. A common mistake is to use a piece of equipment and then rest on it between sets. This does not allow others to share and slows down the pace of the gym. To rest, remove yourself from the piece you are using and be aware that others may wish to use the piece or bench.

Are guests allowed to workout?
Yes! We love to have guests visit The Workout Company. Area residents with a valid local ID may try The Workout Company free on a 14-day trial membership. The cost for out of town guests for a single workout is $12.00. If a member accompanies a guest, the cost is $5.00.

When do I know it's my turn to use a piece of equipment?
We recommend that you match your use to the time of day and the piece you are on at the time. Our busiest times are usually in the early evening after work. If you are one of those members who wants a fast 30 minutes and then go home you will be fine. If you prefer a long hour walk on the treadmill, we suggest you come a little before or after the rush hour. We do not set time limits on the equipment but we do recommend that the members use common sense when it comes to setting your workout time.

What is that piece of equipment?
It takes a while to learn all the equipment and what it does. If you have a question about any piece we have, ask a staff member to show you how it works. Any trainer on the floor can tell you if that piece makes sense for your workout.

What if I have a complaint?
We value your opinion! If you have a complaint or comment, there are comment cards and a suggestion box in the locker rooms. Fill it out and we will address your concern as soon as possible. If it is something that you feel is too serious for a comment card, see one of the managers immediately and let us know what you need.

What we request of members.
As a courtesy to other members, please wipe off equipment after exercising. There are spray bottles and paper towels positioned around the gym or you may carry a small hand towel and clean as you go. Please return all free-weights to their proper place on the racks provided when you are finished using them. Treat other members and the staff with courtesy and respect. Inappropriate behavior or disruptions within the Club will not be tolerated.

"I had a goal, to do RAGBRAI, the bike ride across IOWA on July 20, 2004. I knew that I was not in shape to do it, so my biking buddy, Kris, and I joined the Workout Company. Our goal was to lose weight and tone those 50+ year old muscles.

At the beginning I could not do the whole routines in Bodypump class or Reebok Cycle. In fact, I could do very little, not even one sit-up! But, I gradually came along….the weight started coming off and I really started working my muscles. I have met a warm, friendly, sincere staff of individuals that are always willing to help me improve myself - an added, unexpected, but appreciated PLUS!

I now do some things I couldn't have before. I walk with better posture. My stride is longer, brisker; less energy is exerted and more muscles are worked. My lungs can expand when I need a bigger breath. I give credit for all my positive changes to the Workout Company. Thank you one and all!"
